Tip of the Day – Lose the Guilt!

A perfect night off.

A perfect night off.

It’s March, it’s flippin’ freezing and events are being cancelled left right and centre. I’ll hazard a guess that your motivation for getting on a horse in the cold and dark after a long day at work is at an all time low. So don’t. Seriously. Take a night off. No one will die. Either impromptu or scheduled (so you can look forward to it) works just as well.

My Novice horse can easily tick over on 5 days work instead of 6 for the time being (basic fitness is good enough) and the other one would probably be fine on 4 days a week, though he usually gets 5. The days I do ride I achieve more because I’ve got more enthusiasm and motivation and the horses probably thank me for it.

So go on, take a night off – stay in with a book, a bath and a nice bottle of wine or head out for a meal and a gossip with some girly friends. Whatever it is just make it horse-free. It’s a long old season and we’re in it for the love, not the money. I know it sounds like I’ve broken some secret taboo but honestly it’s just horses, not life! Go on, lose the guilt!
