Living in the Fens, where the wind comes straight across from Siberia, I am always on the look-out for anything to keep my chilblains (which I get on my hips, of all places!) at bay. So when I heard about the “2 x warmer” thermal leggings from Hot Togs, I was there like a shot.
They are, as stated, seriously warm. That’s the first great bit. I’ve ridden in just these with half-chaps, and also with full chaps or waterproofs over the top, and they were great both ways, although because they don’t have the reinforced areas that breeches do, I suspect that wearing them with full chaps is the best idea, to ensure their longevity. I haven’t tried them with loose tracksuit bottoms over, for non-riding days when the windchill is about -30, but I’m sure they’d be great like that, and mega-warm, and a lot less bulky than salopettes!
They are plenty long enough (I’m 5’10” with long legs, and most breeches aren’t long enough for me) – these are so stretchy, in all directions, that they would easily be fine for someone much leggier than me. It’s simply a question of pulling the very forgiving fabric more, or a bit less. No annoying ankle-skimming and riding up your legs, or crotch pulling down through the day – the fabric is the perfect mix of grip-and-give, and doesn’t head south or north! The tension is just right, they would never go baggy or crease. They stay put in the most amazing way.
They wash well, and fit just the same on subsequent wearings – it’s not the sort of fabric that loses all shape after a wash or two.
The only drawback I can find is that dog hairs do stick to them, perhaps because of the weave or the fabric. I have a very hairy small white jack russell and have to keep her away from me when I’m wearing these. Otherwise, they are absolutely perfect, and I’m going to be living in mine this winter!
These are available at lots of different outlets, and also direct from the HotTogs website. Very highly recommended! Hot Togs make the winter bearable… wasn’t it Billy Connolly who said “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing…” ?!
