The entries list as always is a who’s who of eventing and Badminton’s extra qualification criteria (must have a top 50% placing at CCI**** or top 25% placing CCI***) ensure it is only the best of the best competing. As I typed this article there had been a total of four withdrawals allowing three horse and rider combinations off the wait list as Boyd Martin’s withdrawals following his fall last month were double entered and only filling one starting slot.
The field as it stands contains entries from 12 nations and includes 8 former Badminton winners are currently due to start the event, but the biggest name not to have yet won the Badminton title is Andrew Nicholson despite his record 33 completions. If Andrew was to win Rolex Kentucky there is also an outside chance Badminton could offer him a shot at the Grand Slam which could leave him even more determined to lift the famous trophy for the first time.
Preparations for the new course designed by Giuseppe della Chiesa are looking increasingly exciting and we cannot wait to see it for the first time. New obstacles include a pond, a ‘Mountain’ and also a redesign of the Quarry and the Mirage pond.
So with a month to go we are performing sun dances to keep the rain at bay whilst picking out our favourite combinations who we fancy will be able to finish at the top of the leader board. Not to forget we will also be keeping up to date with our Grassroots blogger Brook who will be competing in the BE100 finals.
