Next weekend sees Wiltshire’s premier event of the season take place at Barbury Castle near Marlborough. The title CIC*** and CIC** classes sponsored by St James Place Wealth Management are supported not only by national Novice classes but also a series of other events and competitions. Top class showjumping in addition to an Eventers vs Jockeys vs Showjumpers challenge are two of the main arena attractions on the Saturday while in excess of 70 shops will be there.
Sunday sees the final of the Retraining of Racehorses competition. The top 10 horses in Friday’s Intermediate Novice qualifier are invited back for their chance to win £2000 which results in an exceptionally high quality field. For example runner up for the last two years has been Black Tie II ridden by Oliver Townend, who now heads to WEG as part of the British Team. The novice classes on Friday include Pony (open novice) and Junior (Intermediate Novice) viewing trials which will be chance for invited long listed riders vying for European selection to impress the selectors.
The positioning of the event in a steep sided valley gives an unbeatable view for spectators who are able to sit on the grass watching the action in the main arena whilst also being able to view 90% of the cross country course at the same time. The cross country course itself is known for being challenging but also very spectator friendly with numerous feature fences including a replica Stone Henge, dinosaur skeleton and also the infamous water with its dyed blue water.
