Since I moved house last year, Rockingham is now my closest local BE event, so I went along for the day to be a dressage writer (of which more, in a separate article), peruse the stands (a really great selection, well laid out), and catch up on the action. It is growing every year and definitely worth a visit, with a plethora of top riders attending, all classes full, and great competition over educational, interesting courses.
The unaffiliated events such as the Arena Eventing were also very well subscribed, and last year they had 17 PC teams, this year that number went up to 99 – 2 arenas running all day! An added bonus is that it’s a very central location, easy to access (turn off the A6003 near Corby, pretty much straight into the lorry park).
Sophie McCormack, who had a horrendous, life-changing fall at Rockingham last year, came back to Rockingham to thank everyone who went to her aid – she’s doing a triathlon very soon, on 4th June 2016, to raise awareness about brain injury. Please visit her JustGiving page https://www.gofundme.com/
In the International classes, Izzy Taylor’s good form continued, with a win in the first CIC* section on the Caruso-sired Legacy. She was one of the busiest riders there, with 8 horses competing. Roberto Scalisi claimed the second CIC* section, with Topaze du Plain. David Britnell claimed CIC** section C, ahead a slew of international names, finishing on his dressage score of 44.2 on his self-produced Contender gelding Continuity, all credit to him, while Kitty King claimed CIC** Section D on Vendredi Biats. There were also National sections from BE100 to AI.
I had a great day there and would thoroughly recommend it.
