To speed up plaiting, use a plastic clothes peg to hold the rest of the mane out of the way while you plait, and rather than making all the divisions at the start, just plait on down, and when you get about 8″ from the wither decide how many more plaits you need to do from that point to finish with an uneven number (as is customary, if you bother about that!), and divide the mane up accordingly from that point. Saves lots of time!
