Tip of the Day: Simple pole exercise

IMG_6505This is such a simple exercise but can become as tricky as you want it to be! Just two poles (or I prefer to use planks or these square plastic ‘poles’ that can’t roll if trodden on) in the arena.

You can just put them down randomly, or measure an exact distance between them allowing 12 foot strides (which all SJ coursebuilders build to) and then work on the feel of your perfect canter stride between them.
I just put these 2 down randomly, and then played with adding and taking away strides, keeping the horse relaxed over the topline (if possible) and meeting the pole exactly in the middle of the stride, and the middle of the pole, with perfectly even strides between the poles… harder than it sounds!
