Everything Else

Tip of the day: Turn out rugs as stable rugs.

I used to have separate turn out and stable rugs thinking I can be nice and put on a warm cosy stable rug over night. The problem would be though that the damp turnout from the previous night was still damp and then also cold when put on in the morning. (No heated rug rack luxury here!)

Now though I just use turnouts for everything. The same turnout used in the day will be taken off and put back on for the night which allows it to dry from the horse’s body heat ready for the next day. If though the rug is soaked through which would risk the horse catching a chill I will change to a dry turnout that I have as spare and use that for a few days till the other has dried out.

I now instead of a stupidly large collection of rugs have 5 turnouts that cover all eventualities. I do have a few stable rugs in storage just in case plus a cooler and thermatex type rug but otherwise if there is a rug on my horse it is almost always a turnout.

It also makes life far easier if someone else is turning out or bringing in as reduces the number of rug changes required.

  • I do the same, as in addition to the very good points made above it means that the one that likes to nest in his poo overnight & the filthy swamp pig at least get the chance to scrape some of the ming off on the field when they roll, or (preferably) have it washed off by rain!

  • Ditto, such a good idea, have large selection of turnout rugs in different thicknesses, with necks without necks. Leave them on to dry unless the rain has gone through the rug or dripping down their legs.
