Tip of the Day: Separately numbered fences close together MEAN SOMETHING!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 21.37.38

Numbers 14 and 15, 2 strides apart.

This is another from Accredited B.E. Trainer Tina Ure.

If, when you are walking a XC course, you see that there are separately numbered fences very close together, as here (numbers 14 & 15, just 2 strides apart, rather than being numbered 14a and 14b) be aware that the Course Designer is telling you something… namely that s/he considers this difficult enough to want to give riders the option to circle and do them separately if they wish to, without penalty.

In fact the first of these logs was angled slightly so that you could jump it from left to right, making it easy to circle without confusing the horse with the second part in his eye-line, if you chose to, but making the direct route a little more difficult.
