A quick and easy one: I have a single strip of electric tape on a my jump wings, at 1m (3’3″). Then I can tell accurately at a glance how high a fence is. (I might one day get fancy and put on all the correct colours from Novice to Advanced heights, but for now, 1 reference point is fine!)

I have this and I also have it on the arena fence to show me where to put the cones out to mark a dressage arena.
My arena is bigger than 20 x 40, so I have blue tap to show where the markers should be on each arena side. I just walk out with the cone and roughly place it out. works well.
