Don’t throw out that old rug recycle it and give it a second use!
If you use large haylage bales but don’t have somewhere under cover to store them this is an effective way to keep the adverse weather from spoiling an open bale.
Get yourself one old rug like the one in the photo perhaps with one too many patches or a broken strap or two that would cost more to repair than replace. Heavy weight rugs work best as they need no further weighing down but a lightweight rug and a brick will work just as well.
Simply drape the rug over the open end of the bale and voila your haylage is now protected. In very windy weather you may want to add some bricks or similar to help weigh it down but over the winter this heavyweight has rarely moved an inch!
