Tip of the Day: Transitions, in a test, in a bog!

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 10.32.45I found some old notes from lecture/demos, and one, scribbled on a bit of paper on its own so unfortunately I have no idea which top rider/trainer this particular gem came from, was:

In very deep boggy going, do all your transitions a stride early, to avoid the bogs made by other horses all doing them in exactly the same place.

This sounds like very smart advice to me – better to have balanced easy transitions than lurching in a bog if your horse doesn’t trust its footing, or, worse, the horse suddenly trying to sidestep the bog in the middle of the transition (as I have had happen to me!)
