If there’s one thing eventers have paranoia about – and rightly – it’s making sure they’ve got the withdrawal periods right on anything the vet prescribes for their horse. But how do you avoid cross-contamination? And how do you know whether or not there is a still a trace of bute in that feed bucket?
Avoid all the worry by having ‘medication buckets’ and colour coordinated feed stirrers, which are only used for feeds with drugs in. Keep them separate from your ‘every day’ buckets, and make sure everyone knows they are the ones you should use to give the horses any drugs they need. Use a permanent marker to write ‘drugs only’ on the stirrer and the bottom of the feed buckets so everyone remembers what they are for. Simple!
