Everyone’s Doing Mascots, And Here’s Ours: A Tribute to the Unforgettable “Buzz”

He’s a special-order, hand-made tribute to an immensely special event horse whose flamboyant jumping style and awesome performances, especially as the Team GB pathfinder, kept us all entertained for years, and who was cheered all the way around the course on his final run last year, something totally unprecedented.

The loss a few weeks later of Nicola Wilson’s legendary partner, owned by Rosemary Search, was incredibly sad. So, when we decided we wanted to commemorate a legend of eventing with our mascot, we unanimously agreed on him.

Shocking ‘before’ photo… and a transformed horse.

A youngster most people would think was not even worth trying with… and a totally different picture after special care.

The lady who makes these cartoony figurines does so for a wonderful charity called PFK, short for “Prince Fluffy Kareem”.
They rescue and rehabilitate working horses (and donkeys, and mules, and the occasional camel) in Cairo, and do phenomenal work in the most difficult circumstances. These are hard-to-believe before and after photos, showing the sort of difference they make.
It only costs only £25 to sponsor a horse there for a week’s full care, or £5 for a huge bale of hay.

In case anyone has forgotten quite how awesome he was. Photo by kind permission of Kath Begley.

They have a huge Facebook following and rely on donations to do their vital work. Their Facebook page is HERE, please follow it if you don’t already.
Their photos and stories are at times heartbreaking but also very uplifting. Their website is HERE if you want to find out more.

Usually to get your hands on a custom-made “Fattywhale” figurine (the artist is also on Facebook if anyone wants to see more of her work) you would have to win a Fattywhale/PFK auction online, but we begged very nicely, and made a donation to PFK for our very special little Buzz to be made.
He is accurate down to every tiny white mark the real Opposition Buzz had (we had to check lots of photos, especially from trot ups!), and was made with immense care.

IMG_5666.JPGWe sincerely hope that anyone who enjoys seeing our pictures of him, and likes the gesture, will occasionally be prompted to give a donation to PFK (Paypal address for donations: princefluffykareem@hotmail.co.uk).
They are a UK registered charity and rely on donations.

Here’s Buzz at Badminton, watching over the collecting ring. I have to say this one brought a lump to my throat.

We intend to get pics of him in action at various events… we hope you’ll appreciate him as much as we do.

Every Fattwhale creation comes with a unique card. “Flying Forever” seems particularly appropriate for Buzz.
