Tip of the Day: Fitting bits slightly high or low.

This one I learnt at a Jennie Loriston Clarke lecture/demo, and it makes such perfect sense that I can’t believe I’ve never heard it elsewhere! Rather than trying loads of different bits, first try fitting the bit slightly high on a horse that carries its head too low, or, at the other extreme, fit the bit slightly low to encourage a horse which carries its head too high to lower it a little. It may be only one hole down or up on one side that makes the difference (just wiggle the headpiece slightly if the cheekpieces are now slightly different lengths, so that the pressure on the sides of the mouth is the same) but it is worth a try, and definitely suits some horses.

  • I’ve not heard this but it seems entirely logical – definitely another option to add to my “tool box”!
